Can I use Vaseline for lube? It seems that I get asked this question so often.

The quick answer: It is safe if another form of birth control is in place, but should never be used with condoms. Water based lubricants like MyGlide by Pjur and Sliquid Organics Sensation will not break down latex and that’s why they are recommended.

Vaseline is an oil-based lubricant (hence the term ‘petroleum jelly’). During male solo masturbation, Vaseline is perfectly safe to use… but oil-based lubricants break down latex very effectively. This means that Vaseline will dramatically increase the failure rate of latex condoms (read: it makes the condom break!) and the two should not be used together.

In terms of anal sex, Vaseline is a decent lubricant (keep in mind I don’t recommend unprotected sex, be it anal or otherwise). It keeps it’s consistency, which means less friction during sex, and a more satisfying feeling throughout.

Some schools of thought don’t recommend using Vaseline during vaginal sex because of the possibility of vaginal infection. However there really is no conclusive evidence of this that I can find.

So if you ever find yourself in a tight spot *wink*, go ahead and grab the Vaseline. But if you can plan ahead and purchase a good water-based lube, it will be safer all around, and more pleasurable. Some creative options include this Discover Stimulating Gel or this Warming Lube by System Jo.
